Practice Profile


Joshua has a busy practice and accepts instructions across all areas of commercial law including civil fraud, financial services, investor-state arbitration, international trade and professional negligence.

He is currently acting in some of the largest insurance claims ever brought before the English courts (c.US$5 billion) on behalf of the War Risks insurance market in AerCap Ireland Limited v AIG Europe S.A. and Lloyd’s Insurance Company S.A. and other leading cases concerning the insurance of commercial aircraft leased in Russia.

Other recent and current instructions include:

  • acting for reinsurers in a multi-million-pound ‘Bermuda Form’ dispute (applying New York law) relating to liabilities arising out of the opioid epidemic in the USA;
  • advising insurers in relation to political risk policies over substantial assets located in Russia; and
  • acting and advising, unled, in relation to several charterparty disputes with arbitration in Singapore.

Joshua has spent time seconded to one of the “Big Four” law firms in Singapore, where he was instructed on a very high-value investor-state arbitration and drafted submissions to the Singapore Court of Appeal on a novel point concerning the relationship between a seat court and enforcement court.

Joshua studied law at Trinity College, Cambridge and the New York University School of Law. He is the recipient of numerous academic prizes and scholarships. Prior to joining Chambers, Joshua was on fellowship at Peking University. His research, on the Chinese legal system, has been published.

Joshua is comfortable receiving instructions and documents in Mandarin Chinese, Bahasa Malaysia and Bahasa Indonesia.

Acting for reinsurers in a ‘Bermuda Form’ dispute relating to liabilities arising out of the opioid epidemic in the United States (led by David Edwards KC).

Advising insurers in relation to a political risk policy over substantial assets located in Russia (led by Richard Waller KC).

Advising in relation to a potential claim under a life assurance policy (led by James Brocklebank KC).

Assisted in an advice concerning an allegation of secret profits made through the provision of legal expenses insurance.

Assisted in a number of disputes concerning BI insurance in the context of Covid-19.

Acting for the War Risks insurance market in AerCap Ireland Limited v AIG Europe S.A. and Lloyd’s Insurance Company S.A and other leading cases concerning the insurance of commercial aircraft leased in Russia (led by Richard Waller KC).

Assisted in a substantial claim involving allegations of breach of confidence. listed as one of the Lawyer’s Top 20 cases of 2022 (Maroil Trading v Cally Shipholdings and others).

Assisted in an international arbitration, including a five-day hearing, regarding the sale of a superyacht.

Acting for reinsurers in a ‘Bermuda Form’ dispute relating to liabilities arising out of the opioid epidemic in the United States (led by David Edwards KC).

Acting and advising, unled, in relation to several charterparty disputes with arbitration in Singapore.

Advised in relation to the replacement of a sole arbitrator (LMAA).

Assisted in a multi-million-pound international arbitration, including a five-day hearing, regarding the sale of a superyacht.

Assisted with an advice in relation to a multi-million-dollar arbitration in Singapore involving a complex loan agreement for the development of coal mines in Indonesia.

Assisted in a dispute arising out of the liquidation of a Ukrainian bank, including a consequentials hearing before the High Court.

Acting and advising, unled, in relation to several charterparty disputes with arbitration in Singapore.

Assisted in an international arbitration, including a five-day arbitration, regarding the sale of a superyacht.

Assisted in an advice in relation to a multi-million-dollar dispute regarding the sale and purchase of coal.

Assisted in providing advice to charterers on the validity of arbitral proceedings arising out of the grounding of a vessel in Argentina.

Assisted in an off-hire dispute regarding a time charterparty for the carriage of gypsum and limestone.

Assisted in an advice to charterers on the validity of arbitral proceedings arising out of the grounding of a vessel at an Argentinean port.
