Patrick Devine accepts instructions in all of 7KBW’s areas of practice acting as sole or junior counsel.

Before joining 7 King’s Bench Walk, Patrick qualified as a solicitor-advocate and worked in commercial litigation and arbitration at a Magic Circle law firm in London and Washington DC gaining experience of large-scale commercial disputes, SFO investigations and investor-State dispute settlement.

Patrick was also a Judicial Assistant to Mr Justice Calver in the Commercial and Administrative Courts (2021-2022) and to Lord Leggatt in the Supreme Court and the Judicial Committee to the Privy Council (2022-2023).

Whilst at the Supreme Court Patrick gained insight into appellate proceedings and worked on a number of leading commercial cases such as Philipp v Barclays Bank [2023] UKSC 25, Byers v Saudi National Bank [2023] UKSC 51, Barton v Morris [2023] UKSC 3 and Lifestyle Equities v Ahmed [2024] UKSC 17.

Patrick holds an undergraduate degree in Modern Language (Double First) and a postgraduate degree in Comparative Literature (Distinction, third in cohort), both from the University of Cambridge. He also holds an LLB from BPP University (First, third in cohort).

Patrick can work with documents in French and Spanish.

Marsh Limited v Greensill Bank: Acting for Marsh Limited in a Commercial Court claim for a permanent injunction (led by David Edwards KC and Adam Turner).
Eurobank SA v Momentum Maritime SA. & Ors [2024] EWHC 210 (Comm): Assisted during pupillage in obtaining summary judgment for a creditor bank, in a claim determining whether the bank breached its duties as an equitable mortgagee over vessels that were held as security for a debt.
Sub 20 Ltd v Royalton Investment Ltd & Ors [2024] EWHC 907 (Comm): Assisted during pupillage in obtaining summary judgment for $26m plus interest and costs in respect of a memorandum of loan agreement.
Barton v Morris [2023] UKSC 3: Assisted as the Judicial Assistant to Lord Leggatt in this leading Supreme Court case considering implied terms and unjust enrichment.
Lifestyle Equities v Ahmed [2024] UKSC 17: Assisted as the Judicial Assistant to Lord Leggatt in this leading Supreme Court case considering when the director of a company will be held liable as an accessory for causing a company to commit a tort of strict liability (specifically, trademark infringement).
Astor v Atalaya Mining [2022] EWHC 628 (Comm): Assisted as the Judicial Assistant to Mr Justice Calver in this multi-million-pound mining dispute relating to Astor’s claim for outstanding consideration for the sale of a mine.
Parsadoust v Hanging Gardens Limited [2021] EWHC 1594 (Comm): Represented the Applicant successfully obtaining summary judgment on a claim to enforce a call option over shares in a digital healthcare provider (as a solicitor).

Insurance

Acting for reinsurers in a Bermuda Form arbitration defending a multimillion dollar claim under an Errors & Omissions liability policy relating to the valuation of investment funds (led by David Edwards KC).
Advising a multi-national on recovery of up to £45 million under general and environmental liability policies following a fire at a chemicals storage facility.
London International Exhibition Centre v. RSA and Kaizen v. HDI: Assisted (during pupillage) with the appeal to the Court of Appeal of a series of preliminary issue trials in linked cases involving ‘at premises’ business interruption policies, exploring the wider implications of the FCA COVID-19 test case.
Assisted during pupillage with the defence of all risks insurers in a multi-billion dollar dispute regarding the alleged loss of aircraft following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

International Trade & Commodities

Appeared as sole counsel in the County Court in a summary judgment application seeking the dismissal of claims by claimant freight companies following the theft of cargo.
Assisted with s. 69 appeal submissions to the Commercial Court in relation to a GAFTA arbitration Award.
Assisted during pupillage with a GAFTA arbitration relating to the shipment of goods following the exercise of a force majeure clause in light of the war in Ukraine.

ED & F Man Capital Markets Limited v Come Harvest Limited [2022] EWHC 229 (Comm): Assisted as the Judicial Assistant to Mr Justice Calver in this US$284m civil fraud claim.
Byers v Saudi National Bank [2023] UKSC 51: Assisted as the Judicial Assistant to Lord Leggatt in this landmark case considering the law of knowing receipt.
Assisted during pupillage with an appeal on jurisdictional issues under BVI law in relation to a US$230m civil fraud dispute.

Banking

Philipp v Barclays Bank [2023] UKSC 25: Assisted as the Judicial Assistant to Lord Leggatt in this landmark case considering whether banks owe a duty of care to their customers in respect of authorised push payment fraud.

Professional Negligence

Assisted during pupillage in advising on a professional negligence claim in relation to advice given by solicitors with respect to the rights of shareholders following a funding round.
