Jessica Sutherland has a wide-ranging commercial practice including shipping (particularly shipbuilding disputes), international trade, insurance and reinsurance, professional negligence, professional regulatory work (auditors). She is regularly instructed in high value disputes involving complex legal and factual issues, often with competing systems of law.
Jessica is recommended as a leading junior for Insurance, Shipping and Commodities and International Arbitration in Chambers & Partners’ UK Bar and Global Directories, The Legal 500 Directory and Lexology Index (formerly Who’s Who Legal). The directories describe her as: “a real star” and “one of the best arbitration juniors around”. She is particularly recommended for her advocacy.
Jessica won ‘Insurance Junior of the Year’ at the 2025 Chambers UK Bar Awards. Jessica has previously been nominated as junior counsel of the year (shipping, commodities & aviation) by The Legal 500 and has been featured in The Lawyer as ‘Barrister of The Week’.
Current and recent work includes:
A ‘warranty and indemnity’ insurance claim in the Commercial Court worth €40 million; an urgent injunction in the Commercial Court to prevent the sale of a superyacht under construction in Turkey; a 4-week shipbuilding dispute (LMAA arbitration); a SIAC arbitration commodities dispute worth US$14 million (successful on all issues); a LCIA Arbitration (share purchase dispute) worth US$100million; acting as sole or lead counsel in three high-value superyacht disputes.
She regularly appears in Court and in International Arbitration proceedings (ICC, LCIA, LMAA, ARIAS, SIAC, Bermuda Form and ad hoc arbitrations) and has been appointed as a sole and co-arbitrator by the LCIA and in ad hoc arbitrations.
Jessica is a supporting member of the LMAA, and a member of ARIAS and the LCIA. She is willing to accept appointments as arbitrator.
Jessica has experience in matters of salvage, general average, and other aspects of admiralty law. Cases include:

Jessica appears in court on a regular basis both conducting trials and handling interlocutory matters in a wide variety of general commercial disputes. Jessica has particular experience of large-scale, complex commercial disputes.
Jessica is often instructed directly by in-house counsel at major global companies and is well regarded for her advisory work. Her clients include MACE, Serco Plc, UBS, Travelers, Thyssen Krupp, Enterprise Rent-a-Car UK, General Electric and Brit.
